“The lofty palace rises into the blue clouds, Where celestial music drifts, heard everywhere.”

It was the most magnificent dream of the High Tang era.

Legend has it that Emperor Xuanzong of Tang journeyed in spirit to the Moon Palace, where he witnessed celestial maidens dressed in rainbow-hued robes, dancing gracefully beneath the cold moon. Their music was ethereal and elegant. Upon awakening, the melody lingering in his ears suddenly became clear at Sanxiang Station. Xuanzong took up his brush and recorded it, transforming this inspiration, which had crossed the boundary between heaven and the human world, into the legendary Nishang Yuyi Qu (The Song of the Rainbow-Coloured Feathered Robes).

This was more than a musical composition. It was a magnificent symphony of Daoist celestial realms and the sacred sounds of Indian Buddhist chants. In 754 AD, Xuanzong rearranged and reworked the melodies of Brahman, a piece introduced from the Western Regions, weaving into it the Daoist vision of transcending the mortal world. In doing so, the exotic allure of Buddhist music intertwined with the ethereal, otherworldly spirit of his homeland, creating an elusive and delicate fragrance.
